GSC is great but definitely has its limits. I use it as a baseline for tracking new links but never rely on it alone.
Here’s how I get the most out of it:
- Filter by “Newest” and export monthly to catch fresh links.
- Cross-reference the “Top Linking Sites” with Ahrefs or Ubersuggest.
- Use the "Target Page" tab to check internal content gaps, sometimes a link points to an outdated or non-optimized page you forgot about.
That said, the delay in updates can be frustrating. I often see new links pop up in third-party tools before GSC catches them. Also worth noting: Search Console shows quantity, not quality. So use it for tracking link presence, not strength.
For stronger monitoring, I recommend pairing GSC with a basic Ahrefs or SE Ranking plan. If you can’t afford that, at least plug URLs into Moz’s free Link Explorer to gauge spam score and domain authority.
Does anyone know a solid free GSC report automation tool? I’ve tried Google Data Studio, but it’s a bit clunky for links.
