Why Is My Backlink Exchange Strategy Not Improving My Rankings?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been actively exchanging backlinks with other websites in my niche, but honestly, I’m not seeing any improvement in my Google rankings.
I make sure the sites are relevant and not spammy, and I vary the anchor text.
Still, nothing changes.
Could I be doing something wrong?

Is Google just ignoring these links?
Are there “hidden rules” I might be missing?
Can backlink exchanges still work in 2025?

I’ve been in a similar spot, just exchanging backlinks, even with relevant sites, doesn’t guarantee results, here are a few things you might want to review:

Link placement: Are your backlinks in content or in footers/sidebars? Google values contextual in-content links more.
Anchor text: Too much repetition or over-optimization can dilute impact or even flag you.
Indexing: Are your backlinks even getting crawled? Check with Google Search Console or use tools like Ahrefs.
Authority mismatch: Links from sites with little authority or spammy backlink profiles might be ignored entirely.

Sometimes quality trumps quantity, fewer strong links can outperform 100 weak ones.

It could be due to several factors, maybe you haven’t invested much in on-page SEO, or maybe you’ve picked up some low-quality backlinks, personally, I’d rather avoid “quick” backlinks at the beginning, instead, I focus on creating high-quality blog content, solid internal linking, social signals, and of course, paying close attention to on-page SEO and the technical side of things, including the software I use.
