I’m scaling my backlink strategy but I’m wondering, how many backlinks per month is considered "natural" in 2025?
Have algorithms become stricter or more forgiving for newer websites? What do your link velocity graphs look like in Search Console?

So this is a question I’ve been getting a lot, especially from clients launching new niche sites.
In my experience, there’s no “magic number” for backlinks per month, what matters more is how natural your growth looks, for brand new sites, I usually aim for about 5–10 backlinks a month, mostly branded mentions, citations, niche directories, and forum links, i don’t touch guest posts or contextual dofollows until month 2 or 3.

Once a site has some content and starts getting organic traffic, you can ramp up to 20–30 a month safely, if they’re diversified. That means:

Different domains
Mixed anchor text
Both dofollow and nofollow

I’ve seen sites penalized because they built 100+ backlinks in their first two months using guest posts and exact-match anchors, don’t do that guys, your link velocity should match your content growth and brand visibility, google is watching for spikes, especially if there’s no reason for them.

Great question, and you’re right to be cautious, there’s no official "safe number," but here’s a good rule of thumb:

Focus on link velocity consistency, not volume. Sudden spikes look unnatural.
If your site is new and suddenly gets 50 backlinks in a day, that might raise red flags — unless it's because of a viral event. Prioritize link diversity, mix of dofollow/nofollow, anchor texts, source types (blogs, directories, social mentions).

For most small to mid-size sites, 5–10 high-quality backlinks per week is more than enough if they’re organic and contextual.
