FAQ

Common questions, simple answers.

Everything you need to know about exchanging backlinks safely with other webmasters on Backlink Exchange.

Getting started

The basics

What is Backlink Exchange?

Backlink Exchange is a platform where website owners trade backlinks with each other. Instead of hunting for partners on forums or paying for risky link packages, you list your site here, browse other webmasters' sites, and arrange exchanges through a structured workflow.

What's a backlink, and why do they matter?

A backlink is a link from someone else's website to yours. Search engines like Google use backlinks as a vote of confidence — when relevant, high-quality sites link to you, your search rankings improve. The key word is relevant: a link from a site in your niche is worth far more than ten random links.

Is it free?

Yes — registering, listing your sites, browsing the marketplace, and arranging exchanges are all free.

How do I get started?

Three quick steps:

  1. Create an account and confirm your email.
  2. Add your website and prove you own the domain.
  3. Wait for an admin to approve the listing — usually fast — then you're ready to browse and arrange exchanges.

Direct exchanges

Trading links one-to-one

How does a direct exchange work?

You browse listings, find a site you'd like a link from, and send an exchange request. The other webmaster reviews it and accepts or declines. Once accepted, both sides place a link on their own site and submit the URL where the link lives. Done.

Can I send a partner a custom message or instructions?

Yes. When you send a request you can write a short note explaining your offer. Once accepted, you can also tell each other which page on your site you'd like linked and what anchor text to use.

Will I be notified when something happens?

Yes — both inside the platform (notifications panel) and by email. You'll be alerted when someone requests an exchange with you, when a partner accepts your request, when a link is placed, and if a placed link goes missing.

3-way exchanges

The smarter way to trade links

What's a 3-way exchange?

Three webmasters in a chain instead of two: A links to B, B links to C, and C links to A. Nobody links back to the person who linked to them.

Why does this matter? Search engines can spot direct A↔B trades and discount them — the links cancel out, or worse, both sites get penalised. A 3-way avoids that pattern: each link looks editorial because there's no obvious quid pro quo.

How do I start a 3-way exchange?

From your dashboard, find one of your verified websites and click 3-way. We'll suggest a matching pair of partners — or you can pick them manually. Both partners need to accept; once they do, everyone has a week to place their link.

What if a partner doesn't accept or drops out?

If someone declines or doesn't respond, you can replace them with another eligible partner without restarting the whole chain. If too much time passes without all three links being placed, the chain expires and everyone is notified.

Are 3-way exchanges actually safe from Google penalties?

No exchange is "100% safe" — Google's algorithms keep evolving. But 3-way chains are dramatically harder to detect than direct reciprocal links because the exchange graph has no symmetric edges. Combine that with relevant niches, real content placements, and natural anchor text, and the risk is low.

Always make sure linked content is genuinely relevant and useful to your readers. That's the single most important guardrail.

Trust & verification

Why we check things

Why do I have to verify my domain?

Without verification, anyone could list any site — including ones they don't own. We make every webmaster prove they control the domain by adding a small <meta> tag to their homepage. It takes about 60 seconds and only needs to be done once.

If you ever change your site's URL, we ask you to verify again. This protects everyone who exchanges with you.

What's the reliability score?

Each member gets a score from 0–100, shown on their profile. It reflects how dependable they are based on completed exchanges and whether their placed links stay live over time. New members start without a score; it appears after their first exchange completes.

A high score means a partner you can trust. A low one means recent issues — proceed with caution or pick someone else.

What if my partner removes their link after I placed mine?

Our system automatically checks placed links on a regular schedule. The moment a link goes missing, both sides get a notification and the partner's reliability score takes a hit. You'll know quickly enough to remove your own link if needed.

Why do I need to wait for admin approval?

A human reviews every new listing to keep the marketplace clean — no spam sites, no thin content farms, no scams. Approval is usually fast.

Account & privacy

Practical stuff

Can I list more than one website?

Yes — list as many as you own. Each one needs its own domain verification and admin approval.

How do I delete a website I listed?

Go to your dashboard and click Delete on the site. We'll only block this if the site is currently part of an active exchange or chain — finish those first, then delete.

What happens to my data if I leave?

If you delete your account, your listings, exchanges, and personal information are removed. Aggregate marketplace stats (totals on the homepage) may be preserved.

Is my email address visible to other members?

No. Other members only see your public name and the websites you've listed. We use your email to send notifications and verification messages — never to share with partners or third parties.

I forgot my password.

Click Forgot password? on the login page. We'll send you a reset link that expires in an hour.
